Habitat of P. alpina along a creek in an alpine meadow at Albulapass, Graubünden, Switzerland, at an elevation of 2320 m.

21st July 2004

back
Habitat of P. alpina on a moist and shady slope in a mountain forest (Arcino valley, Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, Italy). With an elevation of about 550 m this is one of lowland habitats of P. alpina in the Alps.

Habitat of P. alpina at Hochzillertal, Tyrol, Austria, located at 2050 m above sea level.

back
Group of plants in summer rosette (Oulanka National Park, Finland) growing at wet spots directly on limestone rocks or in mosses. Under shady conditions the plants have more green leaves and the leaf margin is less involute.

3rd July 2006

back
2 adult plants in summer rosette (Hochzillertal, Tyrol, Austria).  The lower side of the upturned margin shows as reddish-brown coloration, while  the upper side of the leaf is light green. Only the upper side of the leaves are covered in glandular hairs, which serve to catch prey.

back
Plant growing under direct sunlight. The leaf margin is strongly involute.

Winter bud (hibernaculum) of P. alpina (in culture). Typical for this species are the thick and long roots, that do not die off over winter.

13th October 2016

Group of flowering plants of P. alpina growing in mosses.

27th June 2016

Group of plants along a creek. Plants do not grow directly along the running water but more at wet, waterlogged places a little further away from the stream.

Front view of  two flower of P. alpina (Albulapass, Graubünden, Switzerland). The petals of the upper lobes are significantly smaller compared to the lobes of the lower lip. The sepals of the calyx are notched and  joined up to two third.

21st July 2004

Close up of two flowers. The yellow coloured palate located on the middle lobe of the lower lip consists of 2 humps or bladders, that are covered with yellow hairs.

27th June 2016

Front view of a flower of P. alpina (Oulanka National Park, Finland). The yellow spot of the palate is entended by 2 yellow traits, Due to the shady growing conditions the calyx and the flower scape are of a green colour.

15th July 2006

Front view of a flower (Hochzillertal, Tyrol, Austria). This flower has a prominent yellow spot that is extending on the large and broad middle lobe of the lower lip. The margin of the lower lobes are slightly ondulated.

27th June 2016

Front view of a flower. On the inner side of the throat (ventral and lateral) there are serveral rows of white hairs which are  pointing backwards. The inside of the tube is covered with parallel veination.

27th June 2016

Lateral view of a flower (Hochzillertal, Tyrol, Austria). The funnel shaped tube is slightly curved, covered with parallel veination and is continued by the short conical spur.

27th June 2016

Lateral view of a flower (Albulapass, Graubünden, Switzerland). Beside a yellow-brown colour the veins can also be of a pale lilac colour. The spur is relatively short and can be conical or club-shaped with a rounded to slightly pointed tip.

Plants with immature seed pots (Klausenpass, Uri, Switzerland) growing in mosses on a limestone cliff.

31st July 2016

Typically elongated pear-shaped seed pods of P. alpina (Heidialm close to Bergün, Graubünden, Switzerland). The flower scape is of a dark red-brown colour and sporadically showing glandular hairs. Also the seed pods are covered with glandular hairs.
